The Benefits of School Choice for Native Students

The Benefits of School Choice for Native Students

As an organization dedicated to the past, present, and future of Tribal Nation communities – urban and rural, Native Americans for Sovereignty and Preservation believes in the power of education as a tool for cultural preservation and community empowerment. We advocate for school choice, including charter schools, micro-schools, and parent choice, to improve the educational outcomes for Native students. Here’s why.

Affordability

Charter schools and micro schools often operate with a different funding model than traditional public schools. They receive public funding but also have more flexibility in their budgeting and operations, which can lead to cost savings. These savings can be passed on to families, making these schools a more affordable option for many Native families. A study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that charter schools deliver better educational outcomes per dollar spent compared to traditional public schools.

Better Teacher to Student Ratio

Micro schools, in particular, are known for their smaller class sizes. This allows for a better teacher-to-student ratio, ensuring that each student receives more individual attention and instruction. According to EdChoice, this can lead to better academic outcomes and mental health for students.

Language and Culture Preservation

School choice also allows Native families to choose schools that prioritize the preservation of Native languages and cultures. Some charter schools, like the Lakota Language Immersion School, focus specifically on teaching Native languages and incorporating Native cultures into their curriculum. This helps preserve these languages and cultures and instills a sense of pride and identity in Native students. More examples are found at the Dził Ditł’ooí School of Empowerment, Action and Perseverance (DEAP) School, the Dream Dine Charter School in Shiprock, NM, the Native American Community Academy and the NACA Inspired Schools Network (NISN)

Better Education Outcomes

Multiple studies, including a report from the Center for Research on Education Outcomes, have found that charter schools often deliver better educational outcomes for students, particularly for minority students. These schools have the flexibility to innovate and adapt their teaching methods to serve their students better, leading to improved academic performance.

School choice offers numerous benefits for Native students, from affordability and personalized attention to preserving language and culture. As parents, you have the power to choose the best educational path for your children. We at Native Americans for Sovereignty and Preservation support you in making that choice.
