Water is Our Life: Why Arizona’s Native Americans Need Their Water Rights Now

Water is life. For Arizona’s Native American tribes, it’s the heart of our communities, cultures, and lands. Yet, our rights to this vital resource are often overlooked, especially by liberal lawmakers who meet with us and take photos with us but never act on the urgency.

In Arizona, home to 22 federally recognized tribes, water rights are a pressing issue. While 12 tribes have successfully (perhaps unsuccessfully?) settled their water claims, ten are still fighting. This is about water and respect, sovereignty, and honoring agreements made long ago.

Recently, states and federal officials have proposed decisions, but tribes are left out of the negotiations. Were tribal consultations held? We think, and we know, not.

Historically, agreements promised us water rights. But today, Indigenous Peoples still face challenges. Some lawmakers drag their feet, causing delays and uncertainty. Our ancestors wanted something better for our People. Every tribe deserves to know they have the water they need to thrive.

Other states, like Colorado and Utah, have seen tribes like the Southern Ute and Ute Mountain work towards solutions. It’s time Arizona does the same for its American Indian communities. We need clear, fair policies that recognize our rights and help all Arizonans.

Our message is clear: We must secure our water rights to preserve our way of life. Let’s honor our treaties and ensure every tribe in Arizona has the water they need. There will be no more waiting, no more excuses.

Tribal leaders and lawmakers need to hold themselves accountable to cross the finish line on our water rights finally. Water is our life, and it’s time our rights are fully recognized.
