FBI Arrests on Tribal Lands Show Reservation Families Deserve Steady Protection
Reservations get safer when law enforcement shows up. The numbers prove it. From April through September 2026, the FBI’s Operation Steadfast Promise targeted gangs, cartels, drug trafficking, and violent crime on tribal lands in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. KSTP reported that these FBI arrests on tribal lands totaled 168, with 65 criminal cases filed.
FBI Arrests on Tribal Lands Protect Native Children
The most important numbers involve kids. Investigators identified 28 child victims and located or recovered 36 children on tribal land. According to the Rapid City Post, the FBI Minneapolis Field Office worked with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, ATF, three U.S. Attorney’s offices, and tribal police through six resident agencies serving 16 federally recognized tribes. Teams also seized 136 firearms and 2.71 kilograms of fentanyl.
Operation Not Forgotten Set a Higher Standard
Steadfast Promise ran alongside Operation Not Forgotten, a national Justice Department surge into Indian Country now in its fourth year. The Justice Department reported 548 investigations supported, 118 arrests, and 41 people charged federally in 2026, with arrests up 123 percent from 2025. FBI Director Kash Patel said that “our long-forgotten partners in Indian Country are forgotten no more.” This administration sent agents where families have waited too long. Results reach the courtroom too, as one Manderson, South Dakota, murder case investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, FBI, and ATF ended in a life sentence.
Safe Communities Make Tribal Sovereignty Stronger
Sovereignty means little when families fear their own streets. Tribal police deserve partners who stay after the headlines fade! Federal leaders should keep these surges staffed, share results with tribal governments, and follow every case to court. NASP thanks the Trump administration and FBI Director Kash Patel for focusing on keeping our lands safe. NASP has written about why we wear red for missing and murdered relatives. Keep the promise steady.
