Inflation is Squeezing America – Yes, That Includes Indian Country

The numbers tell a troubling story as we look at the rising cost of living since Vice President Kamala Harris took office. Gasoline prices have risen 51%, electricity costs have surged by 32%, airfare has jumped 23%, and groceries have increased by 22%. These are not just statistics; they are the daily realities for millions of Americans, especially in our Native communities. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics. And unfortunately, no credible Native journalist is covering this.

The True Cost of Inflation

The numbers are staggering: Gasoline: +51%, Electricity: +32%, Airfare: +23%, Groceries: +22%, Rent: +22%, Eggs: +47%, Car Insurance: +54%, K-12 Food: +66%

In addition to these individual items, overall prices have risen by 20.2%, while real average weekly wages have declined by 3.9%. This means that while everything around us gets more expensive, our paychecks aren’t going as far as they used to. For Native families, who often face economic challenges that the broader population might not fully appreciate, these increases are devastating.

The Impact on Native Communities

Our Native communities already struggle with higher rates of poverty, unemployment, and underemployment. The increases in gasoline, groceries, and rent make it even more difficult for families to make ends meet. Rising car insurance premiums and electricity costs add to the burden, while the 66% increase in K-12 food prices could impact the quality of education for our children. Are we able to take that drive up to the rez? Drop off some food for our aunties? Add a little spending cash in our children’s birthday card? Help a cousin out? Not in this economy!

Inflation of this magnitude doesn’t just pinch; it crushes. It forces families to make impossible choices between heating their homes and putting food on the table, between paying the rent and ensuring their kids have the supplies they need for school.

A Call for Accountable Leadership

These skyrocketing costs are the direct result of poor policy decisions and a lack of focus on the needs of everyday Americans. Energy policies that have driven up gasoline and electricity prices need to be reexamined. Supply chain disruptions that have led to higher grocery and food prices must be addressed.

Instead of endless government spending that fuels inflation, we need policies that foster economic stability, reduce regulatory burdens, and encourage growth. Lowering taxes, cutting unnecessary regulations, and promoting energy independence are all steps that can help reduce the cost of living and ease the burden on families.

Supporting Our Native Communities

As a nonprofit committed to the welfare of our Indigenous communities, we must advocate for policies that will help our people thrive. This includes pushing for government accountability and adopting measures that address the root causes of inflation. We need leaders who understand that every dollar counts for our families and who are committed to creating an environment where businesses can grow, jobs can be created, and prices can stabilize.

The solution to these challenges lies in electing leaders prioritizing the well-being of American families and communities. By voting for conservative America First candidates, we can turn the tide on inflation and economic instability. These leaders understand the importance of energy independence, responsible fiscal policies, and reducing government overreach. They are committed to creating an environment where businesses can thrive, jobs flourish, and prices stabilize. It’s time to take a stand for our future by supporting candidates who put America—and the needs of every American—first.
