Celebrating Our Heroes – Hopi Code Talkers Recognition Day

The recognition of the Hopi Code Talkers is vital for respecting tribal sovereignty. Tribal sovereignty means Native tribes can govern themselves and uphold their laws and traditions. This right is supported by many treaties and historical examples of Native tribes exercising their independence and managing their own affairs.

The Hopi Code Talkers powerfully displayed sovereignty and cultural strength during World War II. Using their language, these valiant individuals created an unbreakable code that significantly aided American military efforts, showcasing the importance of preserving Native languages and traditions. Most of these 10 Hopi soldiers were part of the 81st Infantry “Wildcat” Division, serving in important battles across the Pacific like Peleliu and the Philippines.

Today, we continue to affirm tribal sovereignty by honoring these contributions. On April 23, 2012, the Hopi tribe celebrated the inaugural Hopi Code Talker Recognition Day at the Hopi Veteran’s Memorial Center in Kykotsmovi on the Hopi Reservation. Although the last surviving Hopi code talker, Travis Yaiva, passed in 2010, his legacy and that of his comrades remain a source of pride and honor for the Hopi people.

33 tribes, including the Hopi Tribe, were honored for their contributions as code talkers in the U.S. Armed Services during World Wars I and II, with 25 of these tribes receiving Congressional Gold Medals. This recognition was mandated by the Code Talkers Recognition Act of 2008, signed into law by George W. Bush. It honors Native Americans who used their tribal languages as secret communication tools during wartime.
