Shiyazh Pete Brings Navajo And Salish Pride To The Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Diné and Salish offensive lineman Shiyazh Pete after his standout career at Kentucky and New Mexico State. Standing 6-foot-8, Pete proudly represents Shiprock. Furthermore, he carries the legacy of his father Natani, a U.S. Army captain of Salish and Navajo heritage. His mother Geraldine is full-blooded Navajo. Pete openly honors Navajo tradition as part of his core beliefs, having taken cultural lessons and danced at powwows. Moreover, he calls the field his sanctuary and plays his late grandfather’s instrument with reverence. As a result, Indian Country is celebrating one of our own stepping into America’s Team.

Sydney Benally Leads Native American Athletes 2026 At BYU

Guard Sydney Benally is making waves in the Big 12 at Brigham Young University. Previously, she starred at Sandia High School. In addition, she earned New Mexico Gatorade Player of the Year honors twice. The Navajo standout earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week. Above all, she shares her motto openly: “God is in control.” Benally chose BYU because of its faith-based mission. Specifically, she wanted to grow as both a player and a person. Consequently, she is becoming a role model for Native youth across the reservation. Learn more about our mission to support Native youth.

Xavier Guillory And Aaliyah Nye Honor Heritage Through Faith

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Xavier Guillory belongs to the Nez Perce tribe. After every touchdown, he points to the sky. In this way, he honors the Lord and his late father. Similarly, Gun Lake Tribal Citizen Aaliyah Nye won a WNBA Championship with the Las Vegas Aces in 2025. Now, she brings her sharp shooting to the Toronto Tempo after the 2026 expansion draft. Nye gives all the glory to the Creator, declaring “GOD DID” on social media.
